MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

F Holland Day (1864-1933) monied Boston aesthete and eccentric, took up Pictorialist photography in his twenties and became individual of its most artful and popular proponent Working in an allegorical diction that recalled Julia Margaret Cameron, he deflected out moody portraits and vaguely homoerotic male bares most in rich, warm-toned platinum prints. For his mostly famous and controversial Series, Day starved himself for weeks, grew his hair lengthy and posed on the cros in little further a crown of thorns. Nearly all of Day's work was squandered in a 1904 fire, on the other hand what survives retains a heady aroma of ecstatic abandon. Dec. 6 2000-Mar. 25 2001; Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, Apr. 21-June 24 2001; Museum Villa Stuck Munich, July 18-Sept 30 2001
